When are CLEP exams offered?

CLEP exams are offered anytime throughout the school year.

How much does it cost to take a CLEP exam?

The test is $89.  If an essay is required, there is an additional charge of $20.  Non-Grace students must pay an additional administrative fee of $20.  Payment can be made by cash, check, or through withdrawal from a current student's business account.

How do I receive my score?

After you take the test, your score is provided to you immediately.  The only exception would be an essay portion of the Freshman College
Composition and Analyzing & Interpreting Literature
exams which are graded by the Grace College English Department.  You must complete both portions in order to receive credit.  Once the Registrar receives the graded essay, students will be notified whether or not they received credit.

If you want your scores to be sent to a college (including Grace College), employer, or certifying agency, you must select this option through the examination software on the day of the exam. This service is free of charge only if you select your score recipient at the time of your test. A $20 fee will be charged for each transcript ordered at a later date.

How are scores computed?

Your score report will show the total scaled score, which falls between 20 and 80 and is closely related to the number of questions answered correctly. Your raw score increases by one point for each question answered correctly, and no points are gained or lost when a question is not answered or is answered incorrectly. The raw score is translated into a scaled score by a process that adjusts for differences in the difficulty of the questions on various forms of the test. Grace College accepts a score of 50 or higher in order to receive credit.

More information

Undergraduate students, including undergraduate adult degree completion students and undergraduate online students, can take any of the subject exams offered by the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) and be granted college credit for demonstrating proficiency in assessed areas. The number of college credits granted for CLEP exams will be determined by the academic schools and assigned to the academic record of the student by the Registrar’s Office. Students should be aware that some academic departments will not permit CLEP exam credit to substitute for required courses in their majors or minors. The list of credit awarded for successful completion of a CLEP examination is available below. Students should review this list prior to registering for a CLEP exam.

CLEP exams are provided for undergraduate courses of study only and may not be used to fulfill degree requirements in the seminary or graduate programs.

Students are permitted to take a CLEP examination at any time during their college education with the exception of their last semester of study.

CLEP exams may not be retaken within a six-month period. If a candidate retakes the examination during this period, the administration of the exam is considered invalid. Therefore, when planning to take a CLEP exam to meet a course requirement, students accept the responsibility that being unsuccessful on the exam could lead to a delay in graduation.

CLEP exams may not be used to satisfy the requirements of any courses in the Grace Core with the exception of ENG 1100 Effective Writing. Students who wish to attempt to test out of Effective Writing must submit a written essay on a specified prompt that will be graded by the Chairperson of the English Department prior to registering for and taking the computerized CLEP exam. Please also be aware that students interested in taking the CLEP exam should not register for ENG 1100 Effective Writing unless they do not pass the exam, and still need to receive credit for the class.  Also, students should plan on the grading process of the essay portion of the exam to take 4-6 weeks. For more information, please contact learningcenter@grace.edu.

CLEP exams may not be used to satisfy foreign language requirements for the B.A. Degree Option, a language minor or language major. Students who complete a foreign language CLEP exam will receive general elective credit that will count toward overall credits needed to graduate. Students who wish to pursue the B.A. Degree Option or study foreign languages as a major or minor at Grace College will take an alternative assessment, the Foreign Language Placement Exam (FLPE), online.
