Assignment

This final paper is designed to give you the opportunity to work with one passage through the entire exegetical process you are being taught. You will choose one of the four passages from Philippians on which you completed an exegetical notebook assignment.

The descriptions of the paper sections are on your Final Paper Guidelines

 You are required to use sources from the following categories. The following are the minimum requirements for sources. To earn an “A” on this paper you will need to go beyond these requirements.

Primary Sources - Primary sources are lexicons, grammars, and texts from the Dead Sea Scrolls, Apocrypha, the OT Pseudepigrapha, Josephus, Philo, etc.

This paper requires references to each of the Tiles on the Primary List at least once (but are encouraged to do so frequently)

Secondary Sources - are commentaries, journal articles, and monographs (book length scholarly studies on academic subjects).

This paper requires to references to at least five journal articles and two monographs.

This paper requires reference to each title on the Recommended List at least once (but are encouraged to do so frequently)

Other Important Paper Information & Requirements

  • Paper Length - Undergrads is 20-25 pages; for graduate students it is 25-30
  • Use 12 point font (preferably Times New Roman) using 1” margins all the way around, double-spaced.
  • All sections of the paper should be clearly marked with headings
  • Accurately cite all sources using the format for footnotes and bibliography found in The SBL Handbook Supplement, a PDF copy of which is available on the Moodle page for this course. N.B. You do not need to include a table of contents for this paper.
  • SEMINARY STUDENTS: You will be held to a higher standard in terms of the quality of the insight into the text, length of the paper, and number of sources used.
