Guide for authors of the The Journal of Integrative Behavioral Science

Timelines for Research Practicum and Completion of Research Project in Order to Apply to Have a Journal Article Published in Open Access Journal.

Preparations

Preparation to Take the Course

  1. Meet with Dr. Wooley one semester prior to when you want to start the Research Practicum. 
  2. Have completed the research method class prior to the start of the Research Practicum. 
  3. If approved for practicum, register with Jenna Ellenger for the class.
  4. If approved for practicum, determine a plan to complete the research project in 1 or 2 semesters.

Two Semester Fall/Spring Practicum A

Timeline for Two Semester Research Practicum (Using Fall B Research Pool)

Week One: Find a Research Idea: Select a topic and search the literature to find an unanswered question. 

  1. Identify a general topic that you would like to explore and review the background literature to find a specific research idea or question.

Week Two: Form a Hypothesis and a Prediction:

  1. Form a hypothesis, or tentative answer to your research question, and use the hypothesis to generate a specific research prediction

Week Three: Develop Hypothesis

  1. Further research and summarize current hypothesis making sure that it is original or adding to another one
  2. Edit hypothesis to make it sound scholarly

Week Four: Define and Measure Variables:

  1. Define variables- independent, dependent, and constants
  2. Identify the specific procedures that will be used to define and measure all variables. Plan to evaluate the validity and reliability of your measurement procedure

Week Five: Identify and Select Subjects: Consult statistics intern

  1. Identify and Select Participants or Subjects.
  2. Decide how many participants or subjects you will need, what characteristics they should have, and how they will be selected. Also, plan for their ethical treatment

Week Six: Develop Research Design: Consult Statistical Intern

  1. Select a Research Strategy: Consider internal and external validity and decide between an experimental (cause-effect), or a non-experimental, descriptive, correlational, or quasi-experimental strategy.
  2. Select a Research Design: Decide among between-subjects, within-subjects, factorial, or single-subject designs.

Week Seven: Complete Research Project Proposal and IRB

  1. Complete research proposal and have reviewed by supervisor

Week Eight:

  1. Complete IRB Application (If want to use Student Pool in Term B).
  2. Turn in IRB Application before break
  3. Provide estimate of number of students and hours needed for project.

Week Nine:

  1. Complete literature review and write up a summary
  2. Work on write up of research article including: abstract, introduction (review of current literature and question that you will be looking to answer with your project) and methods section.

Week Ten:

  1. Continue to work on write up of research article including: abstract, introduction (review of current literature and question that you will be looking to answer with your project) and methods section.
  2. Answer or respond to any questions from IRB Board regarding IRB application
  3. Complete any preparation need to be ready to conduct the project.

Week Eleven:

  1. Conduct Study

Week Twelve:

  1. Continue to Conduct Study

Week Thirteen:

  1. Continue to Conduct Study

Week Fourteen:

  1. Continue to Conduct Study

Week Fifteen:

  1. Evaluate Data: Consult with statistic intern if needed
  2. Run Statistical data procedures as necessary

Week Sixteen:

  1. Report and write up results section

Week Seventeen:

  1. Continue to write results section

Week Eighteen:

  1. Finish writing results section
  2. Consult with Statistics Intern to check validity

Week Nineteen:

  1. Write up discussion section: explain, refine, and formulate your research ideas based on your results in the discussion section

Week Twenty:

  1. Continue writing results section

Week Twenty-One:

  1. Continue writing results section

Week Twenty-Two:

  1. Finish writing results section

Week Twenty-Three:

  1. Write abstract

Week Twenty-Four:

  1. Finish writing abstract

Week Twenty-Five:

  1. Make sure all sections of the paper are completed and edited

Week Twenty-Six:

  1. Proof paper and turn in to supervisor for review.

Week Twenty-Seven:

  1. Review submission expectations for applying to have article published in the Journal of Integrative Behavioral Science and complete.

Week Twenty-Eight:

  1. Finish completing any submission expectations

Week Twenty-Nine

  1. Turn in Application for Journal of Integrative Behavioral Science

Week Thirty:

  1. Complete any changes based on Editorial Review
  2. Complete any changes based on Research Method Review

Week Thirty-One and Thirty-Two: 

  1. Complete any changes based on feedback for Content Review:  This make take longer than 2 weeks to get back
  2. Wait for information to see if article has been accepted for journal publication

 

One Semester Practicum A

Timeframe for One Semester Research Practicum (Using Fall/Spring A Research Pool)

Week One: Find a Research Idea: Select a topic and search the literature to find an unanswered question.

    1. Look at the end of the studies to see what recent researchers think needs to be further studied
  2. Form a Hypothesis and a Prediction: Form a hypothesis, or tentative answer to your research question, and use the hypothesis to generate a specific research prediction

Week Two: Define and Measure Variables:

  1. Define variables- independent, dependent, and constants
  2. Identify the specific procedures that will be used to define and measure all variables. Plan to evaluate the validity and reliability of your measurement procedure
  3. Print off IRB application and review

Week Three: Identify and Select Subjects,

  2. Decide how many participants or subjects you will need, what characteristics they should have, and how they will be selected. Also, plan for their ethical treatment
    1. Take into consideration the lack of ethnic/moral diversity of Grace College if planning on using a student pool

  2. Select a Research Design: Decide among between-subjects, within-subjects, factorial, or single-subject designs.

  4. Complete IRB Application (If want to use Student Pool in Term A).
  5. Provide estimate of number of students and hours need for Project.

Week Four:  Complete Research Project Proposal and IRB Turn-In and Meeting

  1. Have IRB Application and research proposal finished by Monday
  2. Schedule meeting with Dr. Wooley to review both either on Monday or Tuesday
  3. Edit, if needed, and hand in by Wednesday

Week Five:

  1. Complete literature review and write up a summary
  2. Work on write up of research article including: abstract, introduction (review of current literature and question that you will be looking to answer with your project) and methods section.

Week Six:

  1. Continue to work on write up of research article including: abstract, introduction (review of current literature and question that you will be looking to answer with your project) and methods section.
  2. Answer or respond to any questions from IRB Board regarding IRB application

  1. Write up discussion section: explain, refine, and formulate your research ideas based on your results in the discussion section
  2. Continuation of review and completion of internal citations and reference page.
  3. Review submission expectations for applying to have journal published in the Journal of Integrative Behavioral Science

Week Thirteen

  1. Continue to write up discussion: explain, refine, and formulate your research ideas based on your results in the discussion section.
  2. Complete any requirements for application for Journal of Integrative Behavioral Science.
  3. Proof read and have supervisor review final product

Week Fourteen

  1. Turn in Application for Journal of Integrative Behavioral Science

Week Fifteen:

  1. Complete any changes based on Editorial Review

Two Semester Summer/Fall Practicum

Timeline for Two Semester (Summer and Fall) Research Practicum (Using Fall A Research Pool)
